Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
If you haven’t seen a Physiotherapist before, you may be unsure of what to expect. The following information explains what happens and will hopefully answer any questions you may have. If you have any other concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the practice by telephone, prior to attending your appointment.
What’s the difference between NHS and private Physiotherapy?
The main difference is in availability, time and approach.
With private Physiotherapy, you usually be seen much sooner than on the NHS as there’s no need to wait for a referral. You can book an appointment directly and be seen the same week.
Private sessions are typically longer and allow for a more hands-on, personalised approach. Our Physios tailor your treatment plan to your individual needs, combining manual therapy with specific exercises and advice to support your recovery.
NHS physiotherapy is an excellent service but, due to limited resources, often focused on exercise-based programmes at the expense of hands-on treatment. We believe that both are essential to good quality care and effective treatment.
If you’re looking for quicker access, dedicated one-to-one care and a more comprehensive treatment approach, private physiotherapy can offer a valuable alternative.
Do I need a Physiotherapist or an Osteopath?
It’s a common question and the honest answer is, it depends on your condition and your preferences. Both Physiotherapists and Osteopaths treat musculoskeletal issues like back pain, joint problems, and sports injuries. However, they may approach your treatment slightly differently.
Physiotherapists often focus on structured rehabilitation using exercise, movement re-education and strengthening. Osteopaths tend to use more hands-on manual techniques to improve mobility and reduce tension, often looking at the body as a whole.
At Mid Sussex Osteopaths, we offer both services and work closely as a team. If you’re unsure who to see, we’re happy to advise. Just give us a call or book a free triage phone call. We’ll help you find the right treatment for you.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No, you do not need a referral to see an Physiotherapist. However, if you are unsure whether Physiotherapy is right for you, we recommend contacting us first.
What can I expect during my first physiotherapy appointment?
Your first Physiotherapy session will begin with a thorough assessment of your symptoms, medical history and physical function. Your Physiotherapist will ask questions, observe your movement and may carry out specific tests to better understand what’s causing your pain or limitations.
Based on this, they’ll create a personalised treatment plan to help reduce discomfort, restore mobility and support recovery. Treatment may include hands-on techniques such as joint mobilisation or soft tissue work, alongside tailored exercises, postural advice or taping where appropriate.
You’ll be involved in every step of the process and encouraged to ask questions at any point. The aim is to get you feeling better, moving better and back to doing what you love. safely and effectively.
How long is each Physiotherapy session
Each physiotherapy session typically lasts 45-60 minutes. The exact duration depends on your treatment plan and the severity of your condition.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of treatments you initially need will be discussed at the end of your first appointment. This depends on several factors, including the nature of your condition and how long you’ve had it. Your Physiotherapist will give you a clear idea of what to expect and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs. We’ll always be open about your progress and adjust your plan as you improve.
As a guide, most patients feel much better after two to four sessions. If any treatments are needed after this, they are generally spaced further apart than this initial phase of treatment
Our goal is to help you feel better as quickly and safely as possible without unnecessary ongoing appointments.
Is Physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Yes, we’re registered with most major health insurance providers. However, we don’t invoice insurers directly. You’ll pay for your treatment at the time of your appointment, and we’ll email you a receipt that you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement.
Please note that the amount reimbursed will depend on your individual policy and it may not cover the full treatment cost
What should I wear?
We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and access to the area being treated such as leggings, shorts, vests and sports tops.
You do not have to come to your appointment wearing this clothing. There are changing rooms available at the Leisure Centre. Alternatively, you may change in the treatment room before and after your treatment. Your practitioner will leave the room to give you privacy.
