Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
If you haven’t seen an Osteopath before, you may be unsure of what to expect. The following information explains what happens and will hopefully answer any questions you may have. If you have any other concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the practice by telephone prior to attending your appointment.
What can I expect during my first Osteopathy appointment?
At your first appointment, your Osteopath will begin by asking about your symptoms, general health, medical history and lifestyle. This helps them build a clear picture of what might be causing your pain or discomfort and guides your personalised treatment plan.
They’ll then examine the area(s) of concern and how you move overall, as pain in one part of the body can sometimes be linked to issues elsewhere. They may gently assess your posture, joint mobility and muscle tension using their hands to feel for areas of stiffness or imbalance.
If appropriate, your Osteopath will provide hands-on treatment during this first session. This may include techniques such as soft tissue massage, stretching or joint mobilisation. They’ll explain what they’re doing and why, and you can ask questions at any time.
You’ll also be given advice on exercises, posture or lifestyle changes to support your recovery at home. All details are recorded confidentially.
You are welcome to ask a friend or relative to accompany you and be present throughout your appointment.
What should I wear?
We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and access to the area being treated such as leggings, shorts, vests and sports tops.
You do not have to come to your appointment wearing this clothing. There are changing rooms available at the Leisure Centre. Alternatively, you may change in the treatment room before and after your treatment. Your practitioner will leave the room to give you privacy.
How will I be treated?
Your Osteopath will explain their diagnosis and agree a treatment plan with you. Most issues require more than one session and we’ll support you throughout, not just send you away to “see how you get on.”
Treatment typically involves a combination of gentle hands-on techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and stretching. These are designed to relieve tension, reduce pain and improve your mobility.
We’ll also give you tailored advice on exercises or lifestyle changes to help you stay active and recover more quickly at home.
This is your treatment: you’ll be informed of your options and involved in any decisions. If we believe Osteopathy isn’t right for your issue, we’ll explain why and guide you on the next steps.
Is treatment painful?
Osteopaths work with your body rather than imposing ourselves on it so most treatment should be comfortable and pain free. If there are knots in your muscles that need loosening, then there may be some discomfort but we will always work with you to make sure that this is at a level that you are happy with.
People are often worried about ‘manipulation’ of the spine. This is where a quick movement is put through a joint and you may feel or hear a ‘click’ or ‘pop’. This isn’t painful or uncomfortable. The noise is just a bubble of gas or air popping in the joint: it is not from bones or discs being put back into place! Its effect on the body will let the joints move more freely and the muscles around the joint relax. As with any treatment, we only do this if you are happy and consent to it.
Some patients may feel some short-term soreness after treatment. We are often working with inflamed joints and tight muscles so a reaction from the body is perfectly normal. If this is the case, then it generally lasts no longer than a few hours or a day but if you have any concerns then just contact us.
How experienced are your team?
Our Osteopaths have the highest level of training and expertise. Our initial degree-level training was a 4 year full time course. After qualification, we undertake a minimum of 30 hours of ongoing training every year.
In the UK, the osteopathic profession is regulated by the General Osteopathic Council. Consequently, we have a Standards of Practice that we adhere to. Osteopaths are also recognised by the NHS as Allied Health Professionals.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments you initially need will be discussed at the end of your first appointment. This depends on several factors, including the nature of your condition and how long you’ve had it. Your Osteopath will give you a clear idea of what to expect and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs. We’ll always be open about your progress and adjust your plan as you improve.
As a guide, most patients feel much better after two to four sessions. If any treatments are needed after this, they are generally spaced further apart than this initial phase of treatment
Our goal is to help you feel better as quickly and safely as possible without unnecessary ongoing appointments.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No, you do not need a referral to see an osteopath. However, if you are unsure whether osteopathy is right for you, we recommend contacting us first.
Not sure which treatment is right for you?
We offer free 20-minute consultations at the clinic to help you decide. Or, if you’d prefer to talk first, you can book a free triage telephone call. We’re happy to advise you on the best next steps.
