In previous Summer newsletters we’ve covered travel tips, gardening advice and other season specific articles. With a summer of Wimbledon, World Cup football and cricket so far and with the recent Open and Tour de France in recent weeks, many of us have been inspired to get active! So, it seems apt this year to turn our thoughts to sporting advice.
Over the last couple of months, the team here at MSO have written some great advice about stretching routines specific to the cyclists and runners amongst us, whatever level you’re at. And as they’re written by osteopaths who indulge in the two sports, they really understand the issues you face.
First though, we’ve recently welcomed another new face to the clinic. Having already introduced Emily our new osteopath (link), this time we’re delighted to introduce our new acupuncturist, Christine McFie.

New acupuncturist
Christine McFie
Christine graduated with a BA (Hons) in acupuncture from the well-respected International College of Oriental Medicine in East Grinstead in 2016. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and an accredited member of Anxiety UK, which treats adults and teenagers for a wide range of physical and mental health conditions.
As well as using traditional acupuncture to help relieve the physical effects of acute and long-term illness and injury, Christine has considerable experience in helping people with stress and anxiety-related issues to improve their mood, relaxation, sleep and daytime energy.
Away from work, Christine enjoys Hatha yoga and body balance, travel (in this country and abroad) and all things Italian! She’s also a keen theatre goer and volunteers as an acupuncturist each week for the MacMillan Horizon Centre in Brighton.
Christine will initially be in clinic on Tuesday mornings from 9-1. Should this time not suit you, please contact us as we will be able to offer other times by arrangement.
Sporting Advice / Sporting Stretches
Running
You may already have notched up a couple of 5ks, a 10k or even a marathon this year. Or you might be thinking it’s time to get hold of some decent trainers and start finding out what Couch to 5k is all about. Either way, if that sounds like you, then head on over to Adam’s blog for advice on running posture and techniques as well as those all-important stretches. You’ll be able to sustain your running much more effectively if you follow his advice.

Cycling
Cycling continues to increase in popularity with more and more of us recognising its health benefits as well as its green credentials. As with running above, it’s crucial to have a go-to stretching routine to refer to after you get back home. It needs to be quick and it needs to cover the key areas that that sport requires. After many years of struggling with aches during and after rides, I’ve found that this quick stretching routine specifically for cyclists hits all those spots and has left me more comfortable during and after rides.
So, whether you’re out walking, running or cycling this summer, enjoy it while the sun’s with us. And if you’re not doing any of these, is it time to think about starting?! Even walking regularly has such great fitness and therapeutic value that it’s a great place to begin.
Have a great and active summer from all at
Mid Sussex Osteopaths!
