This season looks like being a bumper snow year in Europe. So, if you are still waiting to head out for a week or two, what better time to make sure you are in tip top condition and can make the most of the conditions? And if you are lucky enough to have already been, why not take care of those aches and strains you picked up while cruising all that fresh snow?
Whether you have been, or are going soon, keeping your muscles in great condition is the best way to make the most of your trip. Aches and pains can stop you from enjoying yourself, and can make coming back to work that much more unbearable!
So what can you do?
Preparing yourself before your trip can help to make the most of your time on the slopes. Aches and pains that may have been hanging around for a few weeks can quickly become worse when you are being active for the whole day! Tackling tight or restricted joints before heading out can prevent them from getting worse, while recovery afterwards can be shortened. Nothing is worse than coming home from a holiday and needing a couple of weeks to get back to normal!
Both skiing and snowboarding use specific muscle groups for control and power development during turns, and when soaking up lumps and bumps. Learning how to engage the correct areas can aid in holding tight turns, or staying up when hitting the moguls. It also helps the muscle groups to work most effectively and efficiently, making the day less tiring.
But working muscles all day that usually don’t do much on the average day in the office can cause tightness, soreness and discomfort in the evenings. And if you don’t want your apres ski time cut short by having to lie down to recover, then a few key stretches can keep you relaxed and limber.
Targetting the same key muscle groups with a stretching routine to minimise recovery time and keep your mobility up could only take a few minutes of warming up/down and stretching out before and after hitting the slopes, a small price to pay.
And using our key skills as osteopaths, we will assess your entire musculoskeletal system for restrictions and tight muscles that may affect your time away, while also prescribing a tailor-made warm-up and stretching routine to suit your age & skill level.
Come in and see how we can make your holiday that bit more enjoyable!
